Emeritus Texas P.G. Recognition Program Update!

The Emeritus Texas P.G. program provides an option for Texas P.G.s who meet specific criteria to permanently retire from professional practice with their license number, Emeritus P.G. designation, and a Board certificate of recognition for their career service to the State of Texas and the geoscience profession.

This program was adopted by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG) in February 2026, with the associated rule establishing program criteria published in the Texas Register on April 1, 2026. The Rule may be found here: Rule §851.24  

Criteria for becoming an Emeritus Texas P.G. are:

• Must be either a currently licensed Texas P.G. or a license holder who has a license that has not become permanently expired;
• A minimum age of 65 years at the time of application;
• A minimum of 20 years as a Texas P.G. licensee; and,
• In good standing with no pending or prior disciplinary action resulting in a penalty under an Agreed Board Order.

Benefits of becoming an Emeritus Texas P.G. include the following:

• Granted professional use of the title Emeritus Texas Professional Geoscientist;
• Continued association with your P.G. license number as an Emeritus P.G.;
• No yearly continuing education requirements;
• Only a one-time application fee required; and,
• Certificate and recognition from the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists.

Licensees applying for this recognition must attest that they have reviewed, understand, and agree to the program rules including that Emeritus is a permanent license status that restricts any continued practice of geoscience before the public.

IMPORTANT: Applications for Texas Emeritus P.G. status are reviewed to ensure all requirements are met prior to being scheduled for Board consideration during a Quarterly Board meeting. The required application fee will vary ($25, $50, or $75) based on the license's expiration date. Before submitting an application, contact our licensing department (licensing@tbpg.texas.gov) for the correct fee amount due for your specific license.
